In general, you can usually prevent vaginal dryness and dry skin by avoiding irritants. An “irritant” is something that causes “irritation” which can lead to redness, dryness, peeling skin, or other symptoms. Irritants can include things such as: bubble bath, certain soaps and laundry detergents, disposable wipes, shampoo or conditioner, panty liners, and latex condoms. The tissue in and around the vagina is delicate so avoid scrubbing the area or using strong soaps. If you are sexually active and you notice vaginal dryness and/or pain with intercourse, try using an over-the-counter lubricant, for example K-Y jelly, to enhance your body’s natural lubrication.
If you don’t see an improvement in a few days to a week, make an appointment with your primary care provider or a dermatologist (skin specialist) and get treated.
