A few days ago, when I went to the bathroom, there was brown stuff in my underwear! I have never had my period and I don’t know how to tell anyone, please help!

However, if it’s your first time having brown discharge, then it likely means your period is on its way. This can be a little intimidating, especially when it’s your first time, but everything will be OK!

The brown color means that the lining in the uterus (which is shredded during a period, causing the bleeding) is shedding at a slower rate. When the blood is bright red it means that the lining of the uterus is shedding faster, giving you a period. However, it’s important to mention that everyone’s periods are unique, especially for the first few months to first year. Even though you have brown discharge now, doesn’t mean you’ll have it next month or even the month after that. It might take a few months before you have a period that has the bright red blood that you are expecting with a period.

That being said, it’s a good idea to be prepared! A great place to start is by telling someone you trust, such as, a parent or guardian, older sibling, aunt, school nurse, or health care provider. Letting someone know is helpful so you can ask questions and let them know how you are feeling. It can also be helpful when it comes time to purchase period products (there are a lot to choose from). Finally, it’s important to mention that if you ever have discharge that has a bad odor, causes you to itch, call your health care provider and schedule an appointment!
