I’m 15 and I want to start birth control pills but I’m too afraid to ask my mom. What should I do?

birth control pillsThere are a few things you can do. Try to find the right time to talk to your mom about issues that effect teens in general, such as healthy relationships, becoming sexually active, and how you think that teens should use birth control so they don’t get pregnant until they’re ready to start a family. Discuss your values and listen to your mom’s thoughts too. If your mom is open to talking with you, show her that you’ve really thought about your values and tell her that you don’t want to get pregnant until you’re ready. If the conversation seems easy, be open and tell her that you’d like to see your primary care provider (PCP) to talk about going on the Pill. On the other hand, if you think there’s no way that your mom will understand, you can make an appointment with your PCP for a check-up. Request to speak with your provider alone and ask about confidentiality.
