Since there isn’t a test that has been invented yet, the best way to find out is make an appointment with your health care provider. Your HCP will check your blood pressure and ask you if you have headaches (with or without an aura), if you smoke and if you, or anyone in your family has ever had any problems with blood clots. Based on your evaluation, your HCP will let you know if a low dose combination birth control pill is a good choice for you. There are many different brands of birth control pills; almost all are combination estrogen/progestin pills and there is one pill that contains only progestin. Whatever pill your HCP prescribes, it’s a good idea to take it for 2-3 months before you judge whether it’s the right pill for you. If you experience nausea, breast tenderness or other possible side effects, tell your HCP who can then decide if you should try another type of birth control pill.
