What’s the easiest way to get tested for STIs without my parents knowing?

female doctorsThe easiest way to get tested is to make an appointment with your health care provider. It’s good to call the office and speak with a nurse about their confidentiality policy and if they are comfortable testing and treating STIs. US state laws protect your health information regarding STIs. If you have any concerns, call a local Planned Parenthood clinic or state STI clinic. Be sure to call first to find out if you need an appointment. Don’t forget to go back and get your results.

Even though STI diagnosis and treatment are confidential, you may also want to talk to your parents/guardians about your concerns. You could start a conversation by saying “You told me I could come to you with any concerns I might have; I’m worried I might have an STI”. You may be pleasantly surprised to find out that although your parents/guardians may not agree with your decision to have sex, they’ll be willing to help and support you. If you feel you can’t talk to your parents/guardians, think about talking to another adult you trust.
