The answer to this question is a bit complicated because female babies are born with about 1-2 million immature follicles (potential eggs) yet only about 400 or so will ever develop into an egg (during ovulation). If you figure that on average a female will release one egg with ovulation each month, in a year, that’s 12 eggs. If you multiply that number by the number of years a woman has her period, it totals about 400 or so. When a woman goes through menopause and stops having periods, she has very few follicles left. Unlike males who constantly make more sperm, females are born with a set number of follicles for their lifetime
