Here's a brief introduction to the core staff of the Center for Young Women's Health (CYWH) and contributors to YoungWomensHealth.org. We've also had content developed by our wonderful youth advisors, visiting medical fellows, and other visiting health care professionals.
Dr. S. Jean Emans
Co-Director and Co-Founder of the Center for Young Women’s Health
Dr. Emans is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Harvard Medical School, Chief of the Division of Adolescent/Young Adult Medicine, and the Director of the Office of Faculty Development at Children’s Hospital Boston. She is the author of several textbooks, including Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (5th edition, 2005), and more than 150 medical articles. She has lectured extensively around the world on many reproductive health topics. Dr. Emans oversees the operation of the CYWH, edits all of our health guides and moderates our monthly PCOS chats. In 2006, she was honored with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Adele Dellenbaugh Hofmann Adolescent Health Award. Dr. Emans feels passionately about empowering girls about their health.
Dr. Marc R. Laufer
Co-Director and Co-Founder of the Center for Young Women’s Health
Dr. Laufer is the Chief of Gynecology at Children’s Hospital Boston, a reproductive endocrinologist at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Associate Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School. He is the past president of the North American Society of Pediatric Adolescent Gynecology, and the past chair of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist’s Adolescent Health Committee. Dr. Laufer has conducted research and published extensively, lectured internationally, and is the co-author of 4th and 5th edition of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. Dr. Laufer is recognized internationally for his expertise in pediatric and adolescent gynecology, reproductive endocrinology, endometriosis, reconstructive surgery for congenital anomalies of the reproductive tract, and gynecologic surgery. Dr. Laufer is an advisor to the Endometriosis Association and moderates our MRKH and Endometriosis chats each month. He has been recognized by numerous organizations with awards for being an excellent doctor.
Phaedra Thomas, RN, BSN
Coordinator
Phaedra Thomas is a Nurse Educator and experienced project leader and designer of curricula and health guides. She is the coordinator for the Center for Young Women’s Health, the Children's Hospital League's Resource Center, the Youth Advisory Program and the Peer Mentoring Program. She was the 2003 winner of the David Weiner Award for her leadership and innovations in teen health.
Freedom Baird, MS
Senior Internet Resource Coordinator
Freedom Baird is the Senior Coordinator of the CYWH's digital media resources. A graduate of MIT's Media Lab, she is an accomplished information developer, and web & graphic designer. She has received awards for her digital media work, including for an interactive animation presented at the New York Film and Video Festival, and a collaboratively built installation for London's Millenium Dome. She works on the CYWH and YMH websites, newsletters, print materials, and health guides, and, sometimes when she's sleeping, she dreams about interactive media.
Amanda Kohn, BFA
Web & Graphic Designer
Amanda Kohn is the CYWH's resident web and graphic designer. She works on many different projects including the CYWH and YMH websites, newsletters, print materials, and health guides, all of which help impart essential health information to our readers. Amanda feels passionately about the role creatives can play in facilitating social change, and strives to make the world a better place by touching peoples hearts with design.
Adrianne Goncalves, BA
Youth Advisory Program Coordinator
Adrianne Goncalves coordinates the CYWH's Youth Advisory Program. She works closely with the youth advisors in creating programming and providing them with day to day supervision and scheduling. She is also the coordinator of Children's Hospital Boston's LEAH program (Leadership Education in Adolescent Health), which provides resources and training for healthcare providers.
Kendrin Sonneville, MS, RD, LDN
Nutritionist
Kendrin Sonneville is a Clinical Nutritionist specializing in adolescent nutrition issues. Her areas of expertise include eating disorders, overweight, body image, polycystic ovary syndrome, media literacy, peer education, and motivational interviewing.
Susan Frates, MS, RD, LDN
Nutritionist
Susan Frates, is a Clinical Nutritionist and Certified Fitness Trainer; she specializes in adolescent nutrition issues such as disordered eating, sports nutrition and weight regulation. Susan is the fitness instructor for the Center, coordinating “Gab & Go,” our walking and fitness group for teen girls, and creating on-line fitness education materials.
Pauline Chin
Chatmaster
Pauline Chin is a currently a student at University of Hartford where she is studying to receive her bachelors degree in Multimedia Web Design and Development. She graduated from Boston Latin School in 2007. She has been part of the CYWH since her sophomore year in High School as both peer leader and web/graphic design intern. Pauline has worked on the web site, print materials and many other design projects. She is the chatmaster for our monthly PCOS, MRKH, and Endo chats.
Judith Siegel, MSW, LICSW
Director of Social Work, Boston LEAH program, Children’s Hospital Boston
Judith Siegel is the Director of Mental Health Services in the Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine Program at Children’s Hospital Boston. She has many years experience with teens and adults in a variety of settings including clinics, hospitals, colleges, and in private practice. Ms. Siegel has co-authored and edited most of the emotional health guides on our website and also contributed to our Teen Safe curriculum.
